2014 is the International Year of Family Farming and over the summer some international heavyweights have been promoting forestry and family farms. This combination is at the heart of all the Plan Vivo projects which our customers support through carbon offsetting.

The reports firmly endorse small-scale locally-managed forestry for its social and environmental benefits, including mitigation of climate change. This land use model is integral to the Plan Vivo Standard.

First out was the report from the FAO’s Forestry Committee session 23-27 June. Findings included the crucial role played by family farming in combination with forestry for

  • securing food and nutrition
  • ensuring sustainable use of natural resources
  • mitigating and increasing resilience to climate change

Then on 23 July the World Resources Institute released their report “Securing Rights, Combating Climate Change” presenting the compelling evidence that community forest rights help reduce emissions from deforestation.
