As a representative of ZeroMission I attended a breakfast seminar yesterday, organised by Näringlivets Miljöchefer, with speaker Maria Ågren, General Director of Naturvårdsverket.
We heard that Sweden is currently on target to meet only one, perhaps two, of its sixteen environmental goals for 2020. The goal most likely to be met is “protecting the ozone layer”, whilst indications are that Sweden is travelling in the wrong direction when it comes to “limiting climate impacts”.
Maria gave several reasons for the lack of progress. For instance, while the public sector can be directed to move in the right direction, companies and consumers have been left behind.
This year Naturvårdsverket will begin an in-depth study to examine ways to bridge the gap so as to increase the private sector’s engagement with Sweden’s climate goals. I expect that mandatory emissions reporting by companies will be on the list of ways forward, along with increasing take backs, re-manufacturing and rentals, with public policy instruments to make these happen. Companies wanting to keep ahead of the game would do well to prepare.
All companies are warmly encouraged to use the user-friendly system CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) offers. We have worked hard to make a very complicated goal (zero carbon global industry, an ambition not to be achieved overnight) make good business sense. We cooperate w UN Global Compact, PRI, GRI, Dow Jones SI etc. and have established the CDSB (Climate Disclosure Standards Board) together with e.g WEF. Our system is considered the gold standard for reporting natural capital since we now run CDP Water and CDP Forests. This is an invitation to work with us. Welcome!
Many thanks Amanda for your comments. Here at U&We ZeroMission we encourage all companies we’re in contact with to measure and report their emissions, since this leads to increased awareness, transparency and activity to reduce climate impact.
We agree that the Carbon Disclosure Projects reporting system is established as the gold standard for reporting greenhouse gases and we look forward to following the continued development of CDPs activities.
